South East London & Essex

South East London and Essex in conversation

This conversation between Jess who comes from Rayleigh in South East Essex and Grace who comes from Eltham in South East London allows you to hear how much the contemporary Essex dialect has been influenced by London. Both speakers will employ l vocalisation, reduce  -ing word endings to -in and use both full th articulation as well as occasionally substituting this sound with f/v. They use a very similar energy- quite fast, often include the word ‘like’ and have a strong degree of both twang and nasality in their sound.
